Given its US$192 million worth of international pineapples sales in 2018, the Philippines continued to be the world’s third-biggest exporter of pineapples trailing only Costa Rica ($1 billion) and the Netherlands ($245.3 million).

From a worldwide perspective, the Philippines’ $192 million subtotal represents 9.2% of the global total of shipped pineapples from all supplying countries valued at $2.1 billion in 2018. That dollar amount reflects a 10.8% increase since 2014 and a 5% uptick from 2017 to 2018.

The 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 080430 for fresh or dried pineapples.

Below are the top 10 exporting countries for pineapples during 2018.

  1. Costa Rica: US$1 billion (49.9% of global total)
  2. Netherlands: $245.3 million (11.8%)
  3. Philippines: $192 million (9.2%)
  4. Belgium: $108.4 million (5.2%)
  5. United States: $90.3 million (4.3%)
  6. Taiwan: $43 million (2.1%)
  7. Ecuador: $40.6 million (2%)
  8. Spain: $40.2 million (1.9%)
  9. Mexico: $30.6 million (1.5%)
  10. Honduras: $29.4 million (1.4%)

By value, the above countries accounted for 89.4% of all pineapples shipped during 2018.

Philippines Pineapples Exports by Country

Focusing strictly on Filipino exporters, below are the 15 countries where the Philippines delivered the highest dollar value worth of pineapples during 2018.

  1. Japan: US$70.3 million (36.6% of Philippines’ exported pineapples)
  2. China: $47.3 million (24.6%)
  3. South Korea: $36.8 million (19.2%)
  4. United Arab Emirates: $12.9 million (6.7%)
  5. Hong Kong: $6.3 million (3.3%)
  6. New Zealand: $4.4 million (2.3%)
  7. Saudi Arabia: $3.5 million (1.8%)
  8. Iran: $3 million (1.6%)
  9. Taiwan: $2.2 million (1.2%)
  10. Singapore: $1.4 million (0.7%)

The listed 10 countries bought 97.5% of all Filipino pineapples exports during 2016.

Among these top 10 customers, Japan overtook South Korea in 2018 as the number one importer of pineapples shipped by the Philippines.

The fastest-growing top markets for pineapples from the Philippines from 2014 to 2018 were Hong Kong (up 301%), New Zealand (up 243.9%), China (up 230.2%), Japan (up 23.6%) then Iran (up 20.4%).

Three top importers cut back on their consumption of Filipino pineapples over the 5-year period namely Singapore (down -87.9%), Saudi Arabia (down -41.7%) and Taiwan (down -39.8%).

The average gain in the international sales of pineapples from the Philippines was 30% encompassing all 27 countries to which Filipino pineapples were exported from 2014 to 2018.
